I've seen a 4wd get its front wheels in the air bu accident, did a hard brake, and then the front wheels hit the moving ground while the wheels were stopped. Happens whether i'm on the middle or big. This started on a new chain, so i changed the cassette. Chain hitting front derailleur cage with h limit screw fully loosened. This is an easy fix albeit i will caution you, what i refer to as 'chain jumping' is one of the more dangerous scenarios when riding a bicycle. Pulling up the front wheel is much easier (and of course this helps big time with hopping/jumping).
